Last night, MTV’s infamous Video Music Awards went down.  This award show has a long standing career for shocking the masses from the performances to the behavior from the artists themselves.   The VMAs is where Madonna popped out of a cake in a wedding dress to perform Like a Virgin at the first ever VMAs.  It’s where Michael Jackson and mega guitarist Slash took the stage together, where Beyonce releveled her first pregnancy after performing Love on Top in 2011. This stage is where the kiss heard around the world between Madonna, Christina, and Brittney happened and where Kanye ran up on Taylor Swift to steal the microphone and tell the world who the real winner should have been.  All the classic moments and I know we all were dying for more.

Unfortunately, this show was far from impressive as compared to previous years.  I mean am I the only one that feels robbed from one of their favorite award shows! (Insert poll here)  Just in case you don’t, let me remind all of you what went down last night.

Let’s talk awards first.  Overall, I feel pretty content with the winners.  No doubt that Cardi B deserved Best New Artist and This is America deserved Best Video with a Message, and maybe not all my top picks won the awards I thought they should, but I could understand why someone else won.  Now the 2 biggest awards are Video of the Year and Artist of the Year and if you guys missed it, Camilla Cabello won them both.  Now I’m not knocking her hard work cause branching off from a top selling group and doing your own thing is hard and she made it happen, but you’re going to tell me she deserved it more than Cardi B; whom has just come out of the gate and blew up basically overnight, has been pregnant and still breaking records and taking names.  Or that she deserved it over the Carters who had some pretty dope graphics in their video while Camilla just danced around.   This just isn’t right.

And what about the speeches that went on.  Did anyone else peep the fact that Young Thug didn’t receive any love from Camilla in her acceptance speech, but she dedicated her award to Madonna.  Major shade there. I know we all saw that sad puppy dog face from Pete Davidson when Arianna said “Thanks for existing”.  Way to show your love to your FIANCE.

Nothing beats the tribute that Madonna gave to herself….oops,               I meant to Aretha Franklin.  Well, that is what she was supposed to be doing.  Instead we all had the privilege to hear a 6 minute speech that Madonna gave about her journey and hardships on her way to her career with a 5 second line at the end to quickly shout out the Queen of Soul. Who approved this speech?  To touch on a separate issue for a nano second, where was Aretha’s huge tribute performance?  I know Michael got one and clearly the Queen of Pop aka Madonna is going to make sure she has one. I know Aretha is singing R.E.S.P.E.C.T right now and wishing these people had some for her and all her gifts that she gave over the years.  Back, to speeches did anyone else wonder why Shawn Mendes who really has no significant connection to JLO (winner of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award) gave her speech?  I remember Ellen giving a moving speech about Pink last year and who can forget Drake’s pronunciation of love for Riri when she won? Where was JLo’s loving speech?  And with that, I will just sip my tea.

Let’s talk performances.  I mean what is there to really say.  They were average at best.  Shawn Mendes did give a chilling performance because of that voice of his.  There is no denying that.  JLo killed her performance and dance routine like always, but for the most part I just feel like that spark was missing from the show.  Post Malone closed and performed his song Rockstar with 21 Savage and then collabed with Aerosmith.  Post Malone’s album was a banger.  He should have done a mix and then the collab. My next statement is with caution and fears of waking up to DMs from Nicki Minaj, but her performance was good.  Not great.  Her dancers worked it, but I wanted to see Anaconda Nicki, a real performance especially with a hot album like Queen.

All I can say is the poll results are in and to you the VMAs I take from the words of Ciara and must advise you to “level up”.
