The Louisiana native who has captured Hollywood’s heart with her starring role in the indie flick “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” has landed the title role in the new film adaptation of the musical “Annie”

“Quvenzhane Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star,” said Sony Pictures Entertainment in a statement. “She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”

The role was previously given to Willow Smith, who recently decided to pass on the project.

The film will be produced by Will Smith, his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and rapper Jay-Z, and is slated to hit theaters during the 2014 holiday season.

Quvenzhane made history this awards season by becoming the youngest-ever actress nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
