Leila Lopes from Angola has been crowned as the new Miss Universe, beating 88 other competitors to win the title in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It’s wonderful to see a black woman win this prestigious title! 🙂

(My Fox Detroit) Angola’s Leila Lopes became the new Miss Universe late Monday, edging out beauties from Ukraine, Brazil, the Philippines and China in the final as the pageant marked its 60th anniversary, AFP reported.

Statuesque Lopes, 25, took the crown from last year’s winner Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

The pageant, held in Brazil’s industrial hub of Sao Paulo, had earlier been hit by controversy after Miss Colombia was reportedly chastised for allegedly donning short frocks without undergarments at official appearances.

Photos of Catalina Robayo turned up around the globe and prompted organizers to warn her, “Don’t forget your underwear.”

“It’s upsetting too many people,” she was told, according to FOXNews.com.

Further controversy broke out as pageant officials had to return all of the official swimsuit bikini bottoms produced by local company Catalina Brasil Swimwear because they were too revealing for network television.

The organizers also told Australia’s contender for the title to cover up, according to The (Sydney) Sunday Telegraph. Scherri-Lee Biggs was told her satin evening gown was offensively “see-through.”

Some 89 women took part in the contest, which was watched by an estimated one billion people around the world.

She is so pretty! Beautiful African woman! 🙂
